FAQs: General dentistry

What is sedation therapy?

Sedation dentistry has continued to evolve dramatically over the last 40 years as more options are made available to patients. It has proven to be a safe and effective option for a variety of patients and procedures.

Depending on the extent of the work being done and the needs of the individual patient, we offer three different methods of sedation:

  • Intravenous Conscious Sedation (IV): This type of sedation is ideal for patients with extreme anxiety when it comes to dental procedures, or for those who are having complex dental work that takes a longer period of time to complete. Although the patient is conscious, he or she remembers virtually nothing about the dental work being performed
  • Inhalation sedation: Laughing gas.

What can you expect from sedation therapy?

With conscious sedation, most patients describe feeling as though they have “slept” through the appointment. Those who have had oral sedation often compare it to feeling like they are “floating” or to having had a few glasses of wine, depending on the type of pill and dosage. With full general anaesthetic, patient will wake up slightly confused, but wont remember anything for the time they were sedated. The first two sedation methods will allow you to communicate with your dentist during the procedure. Throughout the appointment, your doctor will closely monitor your vital signs and overall comfort level.

If you are sedated you will need someone to bring you to our office on the day of your appointment. Also, you MUST make sure you have someone to take you home afterward.

How do I know if sedation is right for me?

Talking with your dentist at Dental Emporium is the first step in deciding if sedation dentistry is for you. Whether you are afraid of needles, have trouble getting numb, or are simply anxious when it comes to dental work, you and your dentist can discuss your individual case and options.

Do you do braces?

Our traditional braces are the standard orthodontic treatment option revamped with quality materials, increased comfort, and minimized visibility. We use high-grade stainless steel, thin arch-wires, and a wide range of elastic colors, allowing you to customize your braces.

Our clear braces, made out of ceramic, are the limited visibility variety of traditional braces.. Clear braces offer all the benefits of traditional braces with decreased noticeability.

Do you extract wisdom teeth?

At Dental Emporium we do minor oral surgeries including the removal of wisdom teeth. These procedures can be done in the dental chair in the practice or during general anaesthetic. It should only take a few days for you to heal and feel back to normal.

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars in the back of your mouth. They usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25, and they’re spotted on X-rays. Most people have them removed for one of these reasons:

  • They’re impacted (meaning they are pushing against other teeth and cause pain or discomfort and can lead to an absess)
  • They come in at the wrong angle
  • Your mouth isn’t big enough
  • You have cavities or gum disease

What happens before and during surgery?

You’ll meet with your dentist to discuss the process before surgery. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly missing teeth in adult mouths. You’re also more likely to have issues with these molars than with any other teeth.

  • Discuss what type of anaesthesia you’ll have. You can either be numb or asleep during your surgery.
  • Plan time off from work or school to have your surgery and rest afterward at home.

Your surgery should take approximately 45 minutes. You’ll get one of these types of anaesthesia, so you don’t feel pain during the removal:

  • Local: Your dentist will numb your mouth with an injection. You should feel alert again shortly afterward.
  • IV sedation: The surgeon will numb your mouth and also give you medication through a vein in your arm to make you drowsy. You might sleep during the whole procedure and not even remember a thing.

What is OPG?

Dental Emporium is one of the few practices with an inhouse OPG machine. An OPG is a panoramic X-ray of the upper and lower jaws, including the teeth. The OPG unit is specifically designed to rotate around the patient’s head during the scan. An OPG will take approximately 20 seconds.

How long does invisalign treatment take?

Invisalign® clear aligners can help straighten minor to complex teeth misalignment. The length of treatment can take on average 6 months, but this is dictated by your Invisalign® doctor depending on how complicated your case is. Most people feel a difference wearing Invisalign® aligners after three months, and results are usually noticeable after six months.

Do you do root canals?

At Dental Emporium we perform root canals in one visit on anterior, pre-molar and molar teeth. We use the latest rotary root canal technology. This allows us to minimize visits to the practice and make the root canal experience much more comfortable and predictable.

A tooth can become infected for a variety of different reasons including chips, breaks, decay, untreated cavities, and traumatic injury. Some common symptoms of a tooth infection include:

  • Toothache
  • Intense sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Severe pain and/or swelling in the surrounding areas
  • An abscess surrounding the tooth
  • Substantial decay

It is also important to note that a tooth infection may not demonstrate any symptoms at all. For this reason, we recommend that you receive routine dental check-ups to help identify potential issues and maintain optimal oral health.

At Dental Emporium we can provide safe anaesthesia and sedation dentistry to ease your fears and make you completely comfortable. In fact, many of our patients are so comfortable they fall asleep during the procedure!

FAQs: Cosmetic Dentistry

What cosmetic dentistry services do you offer?

Smile Make Overs, Teeth Whitening, Crowns, Veneers, Inlays, Onlays and Composite Bonding

What is a smile make over?

Full-mouth reconstruction involves a combination of restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry procedures. Together, these treatments rehabilitate teeth and gums, creating a new and improved smile in both appearance and function. At Dental Emporium, our restorative dentists have the experience and expertise to rebuild your oral health into a flawless, comfortable smile.

When should I consider a crown?

When you are suffering with a damaged or fractured tooth, or to replace unsightly gaps or teeth.

Do crowns look natural?

Thanks to their durability and natural appearance, porcelain tooth crowns are incredibly versatile as a restorative dentistry solution. Whether teeth are weak or discoloured, broken or damaged, crowns are customised to fit perfectly over a tooth in order to correct its size, shape, and strength. The bonus, of course, is that this repair also blends in with the rest of your smile because the crown is designed to look completely natural and match the color of your natural teeth.

What are veneers?

Veneers are a thin shell of porcelain or resin that is bonded to the surface of the teeth. This can change their shape, shade, and position to improve the cosmetics of your teeth and smile. They are also used to replace and restore any lost tooth structure where indicated.

What can I expect?

Your dentist will do a complete examination of your teeth to determine if veneers are ideal for you. Veneers often provide the opportunity to dramatically transform the aesthetics of your teeth and smile.

Veneers can enhance the shape of your teeth, make your teeth as white as you want, and give you the smile you have always desired. Additionally, Veneers are bonded to your tooth structure, which gives them strength.

Since they are very thin, Veneers are considered one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments available. Most of the time, very little or no tooth structure is removed before placing veneers. Ask your dentist how veneers can improve your smile.

What is an inlay?

An inlay is a remoulded filling fitted into the grooves of a tooth and do not extend over the cusps of tooth. This is one of the restorative methods used to repair a tooth after it sustains harm from injury or decay.
